Sam Perera MBA, CAIA, CF, MBI
Sam Perera is the founder of Abacus North and leads all mortgage banking and direct lending engagements. His primary responsibilities include structuring, negotiation, and monitoring real-estate related debt products. Extensive knowledge in a variety of industries including real–estate, manufacturing, mining, lumber, agriculture, technology, services industries and consumer products. Before founding Abacus North, Sam held senior finance roles at HSBC Bank Canada, BMO Bank of Montreal and Noverra Capital Partners. Deal experience includes mergers & acquisitions financing, cash-flow lending, hybrid debt products, construction financing, expansion capital, mezzanine financing and the public markets.
Educational background includes a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) and MBA (Finance) from the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia. Sam has a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst designation (CAIA), Corporate Finance designation from the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada and MBI (Mortgage Broker Institute). His interests include travelling, hockey, cricket, soccer, jazz music and is engaged in an active lifestyle.
AJ Dealwis is Vice President at Abacus North. His responsibilities include organizational developments, brand management, quality control and strategic growth, both in the US and Canada. AJ is experienced in identifying business efficiencies, process improvement opportunities and analysing real-estate transactions.
AJ has over 10 years of experience in operations and business process management for National Securities, a Broker Dealer based in Los Angeles and New York City. AJ also helped co-found California Preschool Brokers; a business brokerage company that specializes in the valuations, purchase and sale of privately owned pre-school businesses and/or properties within the State of California. His interests are travelling, playing squash, golf, basketball, cricket, and tennis.
Scott Bearss joins Abacus North Capital as a Partner, focused in leadership expanding the Group’s bandwidth in deal financing, real estate development and general business interests across Western Canada. Scott’s 20 plus years professional history as a Corporate, Commercial & Real Estate Lender with the Schedule I Banks in Canada and abroad, brings a depth of transaction success and practical experience (working & lending) in most fields/industries and financing structures. Scott held senior/leadership positions with Canadian Western Bank, BMO Bank of Montreal, RBTT Bank (Royal Bank of Trinidad & Tobago) and Republic Bank. In the latter two (2) Banks, Scott managed diverse lending portfolios (corporate, commercial, trade finance & real estate) across Latin America and the Caribbean over a 10 year period; operating in English, Spanish and French.
Scott's educational profile includes an accredited MBA and Bachelor of Social Sciences, Economics (Hons) from the University of the West Indies and University of Ottawa, respectively. His pastimes include a background in competitive hockey & baseball, extensive travel, boating, music, family and watching/playing sports.
After completing her Bcom at UBC, Joana began her career in TD’s Commercial Real Estate Group managing credit risk for development projects. She has experience with loan monitoring and compliance including pre-funding due diligence, security documentation, financial modeling, market analysis and calculating key metrics pertaining to corporate and real estate financing.
